What are Sunnah regarding sleeping and waking?

15 Pearls of Islam regarding sleeping and waking

بَسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ

1. Dust your bedding down properly before using it for sleeping to remove the insects or creatures, if there is any.

2. Recite the following supplication before sleeping:

اللَّهُمَّ بِسْمِكَ أَمُوتُ وَأَحْيَا

Translation: O Allah I die and live with Your name (meaning sleep and wake up).

(Ṣaḥīḥ Bukhārī, Vol. 4, pp. 196, Ḥadīš 6325)

3. Do not sleep after ‘A ṣr Ṣalāĥ as it could cause insanity.

Rasūlullāĥ ﷺ said, ‘The one losing his intellect as a result of sleeping after ‘Aṣr Ṣalāĥ should blame only himself.’

(Musnad Abī Ya’lā, Vol. 4, pp. 278, Ḥadīš 4897)

4. Having a siesta (a nap) during the afternoon is desirable.

(Fatāwā ‘Alamgīrī, Vol. 5, pp. 376)

Ṣadr-ush-Sharī’aĥ, Badr-uṭ-Ṭarīqaĥ ‘Allāmaĥ Maulānā Muftī Muhammad Amjad ‘Alī Shawana A. Azizẓamī has written, ‘This is probably for those people who stay awake at night offering Ṣalāĥ remembering Allah or remaining busy with study. Siesta removes the tiredness caused by staying awake at night.’

(Baĥār-e-Sharī’at, Part 16, pp. 79, Maktabaĥ-tul-Madinaĥ)

5. It is Makrūĥ to sleep at the start of the day or between Maghrib and Isha. (Fatāwā ‘Alamgīrī, Vol. 5, pp. 376)

6. It is desirable to sleep in the state of purity.

7. It is also desirable to sleep on the right side with the right hand under the right cheek facing the Qiblaĥ for a short while and then to sleep on the left side.

(Fatāwā ‘Alamgīrī, Vol. 5, pp. 376)

8. Whilst going to sleep, ponder over ‘sleeping’ in the grave where nobody will accompany you except your deeds.

9. Whilst going to sleep, remember Allah (Meaning, keep saying سبحان الله لا إله إلا الله
and الحمد لله) until you fall asleep as a person will awaken in the same state in which he falls asleep and will get resurrected on the Day of Judgement in the same state in which he dies.

(Fatāwā ‘Alamgīrī, Vol. 5, p. 376)

10. After waking up, recite the following supplication:

الْحَمْدُ للهِ الَّذِي أَحْيَانَا بَعْدَ مَا أَمَاتَنَا وَإِلَيْهِ النُّشُورُ

Translation: All praise is for Allah who gave us life after death and we are to return to Him.

(Ṣaḥīḥ Bukhārī, Vol. 4, pp. 196, Ḥadīš 6325)

11. After you get up, make the firm intention of adopting piety and refraining from distressing others.

(Fatāwā ‘Alamgīrī, Vol. 5, pp. 376)

12. When the girl and the boy reach the age of 10, they should be made to sleep on separate beds. A boy of this age should not sleep with his peers or men on the same bed.

(Dur-re-Mukhtār, Vol. 9, pp. 629)

13. When husband and wife sleep on the same bed, they should not allow a ten-year old child to sleep with them. When a boy reaches puberty, rulings of men will apply to him.

(Dur-re-Mukhtār, Vol. 9, pp. 630)

14. Use Miswāk (to clean your teeth) when you wake up.

15. Waking up at night to perform Taĥajjud is a great virtue.

The Prophet of Ra ḥmaĥ, the Intercessor of Ummaĥ ﷺ said, ‘After the Farḍ Ṣalāĥ, the supreme Ṣalāĥ is the one offered during the night.’

(Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, pp. 591, Ḥadīš 1163)
