67. Al-Mulk
67.1 Narrated Ibn ‘Abbas (رضي الله عنه)
“One of the companions of the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم) pitched a tent on a grave without knowing that it was a grave. Suddenly he heard a person from the grave reciting Surah al-Mulk till he completed it. So he went to the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم) and said: ‘Oh Messenger of Allah, I pitched my tent on a grave without realizing that is was a grave. Then suddenly I heard a person from the grave reciting Surah al-Mulk till he completed it.’ The Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم) said: ‘It is the defender (Al-Maniah), it is the deliverer (Al-Munjiah) – it delivers from the punishment of the grave.'”
Jami` at-Tirmidhi Vol. 5, Book 42, Hadith 2890
67.2 Abu Hurairah (رضي الله عنه) reported
I heard the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم) saying, “There is a Surah in the Qur’an which contains thirty Ayat which kept interceding for a man until his sins are forgiven. This Surah is ‘Blessed is He in Whose Hand is the dominion.’ (Surah 67).”
Riyad as-Salihin Book 9, Hadith 26
67.3 Yahya related
To me from Malik from Ibn Shihab that Humayd ibn Abd ar-Rahman ibn Awf had told him that Surat al-Ikhlas (Surah 112) was equal to a third of the Qur’an, and that Surat al-Mulk (Surah 67) pleaded for its owner.
Muwatta Malik Book 15, Hadith 19
67.4 Jabir (رضي الله عنه) said,
The Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم) did not sleep until he had recited, ‘Alif-Lam-Mim. The Sending-down’ (Surah 32) and ‘Blessed is the One in whose hand the kingdom is’ (Surah 67).'”
Al-Adab Al-Mufrad Book 50, Hadith 1207
67.5 It is reported on the authority of Hadhrat Anas ibn Malik (رضي الله عنه),
The Holy Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said, “A person passed away and he did not know anything from the Qur’an except Surah Tabaarak (i.e., Al-Mulk). When the Angel of punishment entered his grave, this surah appeared, so the angel of punishment said, “Now that you are here, I am returning, but neither am I the causer of any harm to you, or upon myself or upon this person. If you wish for salvation for him, then go into the court of Allah Almighty and intercede for him.” Thereafter, the Surah (Al-Mulk) will present itself in the court of Allah Almighty and say
“O my Lord! This person chose me alone from your Book, so he memorized me and recited me, so do you will to condemn him to hell? If this is what you intend to do to him, then erase me from your book!”
Allah Almighty will then say, “you have probably become displeased”. The Qur’an (i.e., the Surah Al-Mulk) will say “I have the right to be displeased.” Allah Almighty will say “I have accepted your intercession on his behalf”. It (the Surah) returns to the grave and gives this information to the Angel (of punishment) and the Angel thus leaves without punishing the deceased. The Surah approaches the deceased and places its mouth over the mouth of the deceased and says
“O mouth! Glad tidings to you, for you recited me abundantly and glad tidings to the chest, for it remembered me. Glad tidings to these feet for they stood whilst reciting me,”
and it (Surah Al-Mulk) remains in his grave, attached to him. After the Prophet mentioned this, every person, young and old, freemen and indentured, all of them memorized it and the Prophet called this Surah by the name “Munjiyah” (the one which gives salvation).”
67.6 Hadhrat Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (رضي الله عنه) reported,
A person passed away and he had only recited Surah Tabaarak (i.e., Al-Mulk), and when he is approached in the grave (by the angels of punishment) from the head-side, it (Suarh Al-Mulk) will say, “He used to recite me” and when they approach from the feet, it will say, “He used to remain standing whilst reciting me”, and when they come from the direction of his abdomen, it will say, “He used to remember me.”
(Mustadrak Hakim 2/540, Dur al-Manthur 6/653)
67.7 It is reported that Hadhrat Abdullah ibn Abbas (رضي الله عنه) said
“Personally, recite Surah Al-Mulk and teach it to your wife, children and to all the other children who live in your home, and even to your neighbours, because it is that which grants salvation, and it will firmly demand (for your) salvation from Allah.”
(Majma az-Zawaid 7/270, Dur al-Manthur 6/652)
67.8 Abdullah Ibn Abbas (رضي الله عنه) narrates that
The Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said, “I have found in the Quran, a surah 30 verses long, whoever recites it before going to sleep; 30 good deeds written for him, 30 wrongdoings are omitted and he raised to 30 degrees. Allah (سبحانه و تعالى) sends an angel to spread his wings over him and protect him from everything until he wakes up. This Surah is (also called) Al-Mujadilah, for it argues in favor of its reciter in the grave. And this Surah is Tabaraka al-lazee bi-Yadihi al-Mulk.”
(Daylami in Al-Firdaws bima thur al-Khitab 1/62, Dur al-Manthur 6/654)
67.9 Anas ibn Malik (رضي الله عنه) reported
The Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said, “There is a chapter in the Quran, not but thirty verses, which will argue on behalf of its companion until he enters Paradise. It is the Surah Tabaraka al-lazee bi-Yadihi al-Mulk.“
(Mu’jam al-Awsat 5667)
67.10 Imam Ibn Asakir (رحمه الله) narrated that Ali (رضي الله عنه) said
There are few phrases which a dying person recites thrice, will enable him to enter the paradise. These are
لا إله الله الحليم الكريم
الحمد لله رب العالمين
تبارك الذي بيده الملك وهو على كل شيء قدير
67.11 Aisha (رضي الله عنها) said that
Rasulullah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) used to recite Surah As-Sajdah and Surah Al-Mulk every night and he did not leave this habit whether he was travelling or not.
67.12 Imam Daylami (رحمه الله) narrated from Anas (رضي الله عنه) that
A sinful man had died and when the torments of the grave began to approach him, Surah Al-Mulk appeared and angrily argued in favor of the man that he used to preserve the Surah and Allah has promised the immunity of whoever does that. The man is then delivered from the punishment. The Muhajireen and Ansar used to learn this Surah and they used to say, “Those who do not learn it are in loss.”
67.13 Ibn Masud (رضي الله عنه) narrated that
Rasulullah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) used to recite Surah Al-Jumuah and Surah Al-Aala on the eve of the Friday prayer and he used to recite Surah As-Sajdah and Surah Al-Mulk in the Fajr of Friday.
(Musnaf Abd-ur-Razzaq 3/79, Dur al-Manthur 6/654)
67.14 It is narrated from Ibn Masud (رضي الله عنه)
We used to call this Surah (Al-Mulk) by the name Al-Maniah (forbids torment in grave) during the time of Rasulullah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم). Undoubtedly Surah Al-Mulk is from the Book of Allah. Whoever reads it at night has certainly earned a lot of goodness.
(Majma az-Zawaid 7/270, Dur al-Manthur 6/653)
67.15 Anas (رضي الله عنه) narrated
On the day of resurrection, a monotheist person who had left no sin and read nothing but Surah Mulk from the Quran will be lead to hell. Something like a Shihab (shooting star) will fly from his abdomen and it will say,
“O Allah! Undoubtedly You have revealed me on Your Messenger. Your servant frequently recited me.”
And it will continue to argue on behalf of its reciter till he is admitted into paradise. And that Surah is Al-Munjiah (the savior), that is Tabaraka al-lazee bi-Yadihi al-Mulk.
(Daylami in Al-Firdaws bima thur al-Khitab 5/467, Dur al-Manthur 6/654)
67.16 Ibn Masud (رضي الله عنه) narrated
When a person dies, a consuming fire is alighted around him (in the grave) if he does not have a deed to protect him from the fire. But if a person had only preserved the Surah with 30 verses (Al-Mulk), it will protect his head saying, “Undoubtedly, he used to recite me”. It will come from his feet and say, “Undoubtedly, he used to stand with me”. It will shield his abdomen saying, “Undoubtedly, he had memorized me.” Thus it will save him from the torment.
67.17 Mufti Muhammad Shafi (رحمه الله) writes in his Tafsir
Prophetic Tradition has named Surah Al-Mulk as Waqiyah (protector) and Munjiyah (saviour) as well. In a Tradition, the Holy Prophet (ﷺ) is reported to have said:
ھِیَ المانعۃ المنجیۃ تنجیہ من عذاب القبر
“It [Surah Al-Mulk] is the protector and saviour which will rescue and redeem him who recites it from the torment of the grave.” (Tirmidhi and Qurtubi)
Sayyidna Ibn Abbas (رضي الله عنه) reports that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:

“Verily, there is a Surah in the Book of Allah (Qur’an) containing thirty verses that will intercede on behalf of him who recites it until he is rescued from Hell and admitted to Paradise; and it is Surah Tabaraka al-lazee bi-Yadihi al-Mulk.” (Tirmidhi and Qurtubi).
67.18 Al-Alusi (رحمه الله) writes
If Al-Mulk is recited on sighting the (new) moon, the person will remain safe from troubles for that month, for this Surah has 30 verves that suffice the 30 days.
(Ruh al-Ma’ani, Majmooa wazaif p132)
67.19 Sayyid Mustafa Musawi (رحمه الله) writes
(i) Imam Ja’far as-Sadiq (عليه السلام) said that reciting Surah Al-Mulk at night keeps one under the protection of Allah (سبحانه و تعالى) until morning.
(ii) Recitation Surah Al-Mulk on the night of Eid gives the reward of staying awake the whole night in worship.

67.20 Muhaddith Nuri (رحمه الله) has recorded
A Hadith from the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) that Sura al-Mulk intervenes on behalf of its reciter on the day of resurrection, asking for his forgiveness.
67.21 Ashraf Ali Thanvi (رحمه الله) writes
To relieve inflammation of the eyes, Suratul Mulk should be recited thrice each day for 3 consecutive days. After reciting it 3 times, blow on the patient’s eyes. The suffering will be alleviated In’Sha Allah.
(Remedies from the Holy Quran p91)
67.22 Allama Alam Faqri (رحمه الله) writes
