106. Quraysh

106.1 Umm Hani’ bint Abi Talib (رضي الله عنه) who reported

That the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم) said:

“Allah has favoured the Quraysh with seven characteristics which he has never given to anyone before them and will never give to anyone after them:

(i) The post of the Caliph (al-Khilafah) is given to one among them,

(ii) The custody of the Sacred House (al-Hijabah) is assumed by someone from amongst them,

(iii) Giving water to the pilgrims (al-Siqayah) during Hajj is undertaken by someone amongst them, (iv) prophethood is given to someone amongst them,

(v) They were given victory over the [army of] elephants,

(vi) They worshipped Allah for seven years during which none worshipped Him, and

(vii) A Surah has been revealed about them in which none but them was mentioned-

﴾ لإيلاف قريش ﴿

For the taming of Quraysh (106:1).”

106.2 The Holy Prophet (صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم) said

That the one who recites this Surah will get the reward of ten times the number of people performing Tawaaf and I’tekaaf.

106.3 Mufti Shafi Usmani (رحمه الله) recorded

A Great Benefit Abul Hasan Qazwini has stated that anyone who fears his enemy or an affliction, should recite Surah Al-Quraish. It will give him security from fear and calamity (إن شاء الله‎). This is cited by Imam Jazri and he says that this Surah has been tried and tested successfully for this purpose.

Qadi Thana’ullah Panipati (رحمه الله) cites this in his Tafsir Mazhari and says that his Shaikh Mirza Mazhar Jan-i-Janan instructed him to recite this Surah at the time of fear and danger, and said its recitation has been tested and tried to avert all kinds of calamities and afflictions (إن شاء الله‎). Qadi Thana’ullah says that he has experienced it several times.

106.4 Narrated Wathilah bin Al-Asqa’ (رضي الله عنه)

That the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم) said: “Indeed Allah has chosen Isma’il from the children of Ibrahim (عليه السلام), and He chose Banu Kinanah from the children of Isma’il, and He chose the Quraish from Banu Kinanah, and He chose Banu Hashim from Quraish, and He chose me from Banu Hashim.”

106.5 Narrated Tawus (رضي الله عنه)

Ibn `Abbas (رضي الله عنه) recited the Qur’anic Verse:–

Except to be kind to me for my kin-ship to you (42:23)

Sa`id bin Jubair said, “(The Verse implies) the kinship of Muhammad.” Ibn `Abbas said, “There was not a single house (i.e. sub-tribe) of Quraish but had a kinship to the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم) and so the above Verse was revealed in this connection, and its interpretation is: ‘O Quraish! You should keep good relation between me (i.e. Muhammad) and you.”

106.6 Narrated Muhammad bin Jubair bin Mut`im (رضي الله عنه)

That while he was with a delegation from Quraish to Muawiya (رضي الله عنه), the latter heard the news that `Abdullah bin `Amr bin Al-`As (رضي الله عنه)said that there would be a king from the tribe of Qahtan. On that Muawiya became angry, got up and then praised Allah as He deserved, and said, “Now then, I have heard that some men amongst you narrate things which are neither in the Holy Book, nor have been told by Allah’s Messenger (صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم). Those men are the ignorant amongst you. Beware of such hopes as make the people go astray, for I heard Allah’s Messenger (صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم) saying, ‘Authority of ruling will remain with Quraish, and whoever bears hostility to them, Allah will destroy him as long as they abide by the laws of the religion.’ ”

106.7 Narrated Ibn `Umar (رضي الله عنه)

The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم) said, “Authority of ruling will remain with Quraish, even if only two of them remained.”

106.8 Narrated Anas (رضي الله عنه)

`Uthman called Zaid bin Thabit, `Abdullah bin Az-Zubair, Sa`id bin Al-`As and `AbdurRahman bin Al-Harith bin Hisham (رضي الله عنهم), and then they wrote the manuscripts of the Holy Qur’an in the form of book in several copies. `Uthman said to the three Quraishi persons. ” If you differ with Zaid bin Thabit on any point of the Qur’an, then write it in the language of Quraish, as the Qur’an was revealed in their language.” So they acted accordingly. (Sa`id bin Thabit was an Ansari and not from Quraish).

106.9 Narrated Abu Huraira (رضي الله عنه)

The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم) said, “The tribes of Quraish, Al-Ansar, Juhaina, Muzaina, Aslam, Ghifar and Ashja’ are my helpers, and they have no protector (i.e. Master) except Allah and His Apostle.”

106.10 Narrated Ibn `Abbas (رضي الله عنه)

When the Verse:–

‘And warn your tribe of near kindred.’ (26:214)

was revealed, the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم) started calling (the ‘Arab tribes), “O Bani Fihr, O Bani `Adi” mentioning first the various branch tribes of Quraish.

106.11 Narrated Ibn ‘Abbas (رضي الله عنه)

That the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم) said:

اللهم أذقت أول قريش نكالا فأذق آخرهم نوالا

O Allah! You made the first of the Quraish taste punishment, so let the last of them taste blessings.
