following the command given by the Qur’an

When the “Surat-An-Nasr”,

اذا جاء نصر الله والفتح

When comes the Help of Allah and the conquest (110:1)

had been revealed to the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم), he did not offer any prayer except that he said therein,

سبحانك ربنا وبحمدك ، اللهم اغفر لي

I testify the Uniqueness of our Lord, and all the praises are for Him: O Allah, forgive me!

110.3 Ubaidullah b. ‘Abdullah b. ‘Utba (رضي الله عنه) reported

Ibn Abbas (رضي الله عنه) said to me: Do you know-and in the words of Harun (another narrator): Are you aware of-the last Sura which was revealed in the Qur’an as a whole? I said: Yes,

اذا جاء نصر الله والفتح

When came the help from Allah and the victory (110)

Thereupon, he said: You have told the truth. And in the narration of Abu Shaiba (the words are): Do you know the Sura? And he did not mention the words “the last one”.

Sahih Muslim 3024 a

110.4 Narrated Anas bin Malik (رضي الله عنه)

That the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم) said to a man among his Companions: “Have you married O so-and-so?” He said: “No by Allah O Messenger of Allah! And I do not have anything to marry with.” He said: “Do you not know: Qul Huwa Allahu Ahad (112)?” He said: “Of course.” He said: “It is a third of the Qur’an.” He said: “Do you not know Idha Ja Nasrullahi Wal-Fath (110)?” He said: “Of course.” He said: “It is a fourth of the Qur’an.” He said: “Do you not know Qul Ya Ayyuhal-Kafirun (109)?” He said: “Of course.” He said: “It is a fourth of the Qur’an.” He said: “Do you not know Idha Zulzilat Al-Ard? (99)” He said: “Of course.” He said: “It is a fourth of the Qur’an.” He said: “Marry, marry.”

`Umar (رضي الله عنه) asked the people regarding Allah’s Statement:

اذا جاء نصر الله والفتح

‘When comes the Help of Allah (to you O Muhammad against your enemies) and the conquest (of Mecca).’ (110.1)

They replied, “It indicates the future conquest of towns and palaces (by Muslims).” `Umar said, “What do you say about it, O Ibn `Abbas?” I replied, “(This Surat) indicates the termination of the life of Muhammad. Through it he was informed of the nearness of his death.”

Sahih al-Bukhari Vol. 6, Book 60, Hadith 493

110.6 Narrated ‘Abdullah bin ‘Amr (رضي الله عنه)

110.7 Narrated Ibn `Abbas (رضي الله عنه)

`Umar bin Al-Khattab (رضي الله عنه) used to let Ibn `Abbas sit beside him, so `Abdur Rahman bin `Auf (رضي الله عنه) said to `Umar, “We have sons similar to him.” `Umar replied, “(I respect him) because of his status that you know.” `Umar then asked Ibn `Abbas about the meaning of this Holy Verse-

اذا جاء نصر الله والفتح

When comes the help of Allah and the conquest (of Mecca) . . .(110.1)

Ibn `Abbas replied, “That indicated the death of Allah’s Messenger (صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم) which Allah informed him of.” `Umar said, “I do not understand of it except what you understand.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 4430

110.8 Narrated Ibn `Abbas (رضي الله عنه)

`Umar (رضي الله عنه) used to admit me (into his house) along with the old men who had fought in the Badr battle. Some of them said (to `Umar), “Why do you allow this young man to enter with us, while we have sons of his own age? ” `Umar said, “You know what person he is.” One day `Umar called them and called me along with them, I had thought he called me on that day to show them something about me (i.e. my knowledge). `Umar asked them, “What do you say about (the Sura):

إذا جاء نصر الله والفتح

When comes the help of Allah and the Conquest (of Mecca)

ورأيت الناس يدخلون في دين الله أفواجا

And you see mankind entering the Religion of Allah (i.e. Islam) in crowds.

فسبح بحمد ربك واستغفره إنه كان توابا

So celebrate the Praises Of your Lord and ask for His forgiveness, Truly, He is the One Who accepts repentance and forgives.” (110.1-3)

Some of them replied, “We are ordered to praise Allah and repent to Him if we are helped and granted victory.” Some said, “We do not know.” Others kept quiet. `Umar then said to me, “Do you say similarly?” I said, “No.” `Umar said “What do you say then?” I said, “This Verse indicates the approaching of the death of Allah’s Messenger (صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم) of which Allah informed him. When comes the help of Allah and the Conquest, i.e. the Conquest of Mecca, that will be the sign of your Prophet’s) approaching death, so testify the uniqueness of your Lord (i.e. Allah) and praise Him and repent to Him as He is ready to forgive.” On that, `Umar said, “I do not know about it anything other than what you know.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 4294

110.9 ‘A’isha (رضي الله عنها) reported

The Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم) recited often these words:

She said: I asked: Messenger of Allah, I see that you often repeat the saying

سبحان الله وبحمده استغفر الله واتوب اليه

Hallowed be Allah and with His praise, I seek the forgiveness of Allah and return to Him.

whereupon he said: My Lord informed me that I would soon see a sign in my Ummah, so when I see it I often recite (these) words.

Indeed I saw it (when this verse) was revealed:

إذا جاء نصر الله والفتح

When Allah’s help and victory came,

it marked the victory of Mecca,

ورأيت الناس يدخلون في دين الله أفواجا

and you see people entering into Allah’s religion in troops,

فسبح بحمد ربك واستغفره إنه كان توابا

celebrate the praise of Thy Lord and ask His forgiveness. Surely He is ever returning to Mercy.” (110)

Sahih Muslim 484 d

110.10 A tradition from Imam Sadiq (عليه السلام) says

He who keeps reciting Surah Nasr in his optional or obligatory prayers, Allah (جل جلاله) makes him successful in defeating his enemies, totally, and on the Day of Judgement he will come with a letter which talks. Verily Allah has brought him out of his grave with that letter as an immunity from the heat and fire f Hell.

(Majma’-al-Bayan)

110.11 Ibn Tawus (رحمه الله‎) recorded

Whoever performs four rak’as in the night of 9th Shaban and in each rak’a recites Surah al-Nasr 10 times after Surah al-Fatiha, Allah will prohibit fire to his body and he will be rewarded like the martyrs and the pious.

(Iqbal al-Aamal 3/220)

110.12 Allama Alam Faqri (رحمه الله‎) writes

To rid from the tyranny of enemies, recite Surah An-Nasr 1100 times daily for 40 days and pray to Allah. By His leave, the enemy will be subdued.

(Majmooa Wazaif p190)

110.13 Allama Alam Faqri (رحمه الله‎) writes

(i) To fulfill some indispensable need, recite Surah An-Nasr 70 times in solitude daily for 11 days.

(ii) To achieve repentance and forgiveness of major/minor sins, make a habit of reciting Surah An-Nasr 11 times after Fajr and Isha.

(iii) To request Allah’s help in all your affairs, recite Surah An-Nasr 3 times after every Salah.

(iv) To make a conflicting family member subservient, recite Surah An-Nasr 11 times for 40 days.
