98. Al-Bayyinah

98.1 Narrated Anas bin Malik (رضي الله عنه)

The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم) said to Ubai (bin Ka`b). “Allah has ordered me to recite to you:–‘Those who disbelieve among the people of the Scripture and among the idolators are not going to stop (from their disbelief.’) (Sura 98) Ubai said, “Did Allah mention me by name?” The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم) said, “Yes.” On that, Ubai wept.

98.2 Narrated Ubayy bin Ka’b (رضي الله عنه)

That the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم) said to him: “Indeed Allah has ordered me to recite the Qur’an to you.” So he recited to him: “Those who disbelieved were not going to… (98:1) and he recited in it: “Indeed the religion with Allah is that which is Hanafiyyah, Muslim, not Judaism, nor Christianity, nor Zoroastrian, whoever does good then it shall not be rejected from him.” And he recited to him: “If the son of Adam had a valley of wealth he would seek a second, and if he had a second he would seek a third, and nothing fills the belly of the son of Adam except dirt. And Allah pardons those who repent.”

98.3 Ibn Kathir (رحمه الله) related regarding the ayah

﴾ وما تفرق الذين أوتوا الكتاب إلا من بعد ما جاءتهم البينة ﴿

Nor did those who were given the Scripture become divided until after there had come to them clear evidence. (98:4)

That the prophet (صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم) said, “Verily, the Jews differed until they became seventy-one sects. And verily, the Christians differed until they became seventy-two sects. And this Ummah will divide into seventy-three sects, and all of them will be in the Fire except one.” They said, “Who are they, O Messenger of Allah” He replied, “Those who are upon what I and my Companions are upon”.

98.4 Ibn Kathir (رحمه الله) related regarding the ayaat

﴾ أولئك هم شر البرية ﴿

Those are the worst of creatures (98:6)

﴾ أولئك هم خير البرية ﴿

Those are the best of creatures (98:7)

That Imam Ahmad (رحمه الله) recorded from Abu Hurayrah (رضي الله عنه)that the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم) said, “Shall I not inform you of the best of creation”? They said, “Of course, O Messenger of Allah!” He said, “A man who takes the reins of his horse in the way of Allah, and whenever there is a fearful cry from the enemy, he climbs upon it. Shall I not inform you of the best of creation”? They said, “Of course, O Messenger of Allah!” He said, “A man who has a flock of sheep and he establishes the prayer and gives the obligatory charity. Shall I not inform you of the worst of creation”/ They said, “Of course.” He said, “The person who is asked by Allah and he does not give by Him”.

98.5 Imam Abu Naeem in Al-Marifah narrated from Ismail bin Abi Hakeem Mazni (رحمهم الله)

That the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم) said, “Verily, Allah listens to the recitation of Lam yakuni and Says, “Give glad tidings to My servant. By My Honor and Glory! I will certainly give you so much authority in Paradise that you will be pleased.”

98.6 Imam Abu Musa in Al-Marifah narrated from Ismail bin Abi Hakeem (رحمهم الله)

That the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم) said, “Undoubtedly, Allah listens to the recitation of Lam yakuni and Says, “Give glad tidings to My servant. By My Honor and Glory! I will not forget you in any situation of the world and the hereafter and I will give you abundant authority in the Heaven that you will be pleased.”

98.7 Sayyid Mustafa Musawi (رحمه الله) writes

Reciting Surat Al-Bayyinah before eating food removes any ill effects of the foods.
