95. At-Tin

95.1 Narrated Abu Hurayrah (رضي الله عنه)

The Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم) said: When one of you recites “By the fig and the olive” (Surah 95) and comes to its end

﴾ أليس الله بأحكم الحاكمين ﴿

“Is not Allah the best judge?” (95:8),

he should say:

بلى وأنا على ذلك من الشاهدين

“Certainly, and I am one of those who testify to that.”

When one recites “I swear by the Day of Resurrection” (Surah 75 Al-Qiyamah) and comes to

﴾ أليس ذلك بقادر على أن يحيي الموتى ﴿

“Is not that one able to raise the dead to life? (75:40),

he should say:

بَلَى

“Certainly.”

And when one recites “By those that are sent” (Surah 77 Al-Mursalat), and comes to

﴾ فبأي حديث بعده يؤمنون ﴿

“Then in what message after that will they believe? ” (77:50),

he should say:

آمنا بالله

“We believe in Allah.”

Sunan Abi Dawud 887

95.2 Al-Bara’ bin ‘Azib (رضي الله عنه) reported

I heard the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم) reciting Surat ‘Wat-Teen Waz-Zaitun’ (Chapter 95) during the Isha prayer. I have never heard anyone reciting it in a more beautiful voice than his.

Riyad as-Salihin Book 9, Hadith 16

95.3 Narrated Al-Bara (رضي الله عنه)

The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم) was on a journey and recited in one of the first two rak’at of the Isha prayer ‘Wa t-teeni wa z-zaitun.’ (95)

Sahih al-Bukhari 767

95.4 Yahya (رحمه الله) related

To me from Malik from Yahya ibn Said from Adi ibn Thabit al-Ansari that al-Barra ibn Azib (رضي الله عنهم) said, “I prayed Isha with the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم) and he recited at-Tin (Sura 95) in it.”

Muwatta Malik Book 3, Hadith 28

95.5 Ismail bin Umayyah (رضي الله عنه) said

“I heard a Bedouin man saying: ‘I heard Abu Hurairah (رضي الله عنه) saying: “Whoever recited Surat ‘Watteeni wazzaytoon’ Then he recited:

﴾ أليس الله بأحكم الحاكمين ﴿

‘Is not Allah the best of judges?’ (95:8)

then let him say:

بلى وأنا على ذلك من الشاهدين

‘Of course, and I am a witness to that.’”

Jami` at-Tirmidhi Vol. 5, Book 44, Hadith 3347

95.6 Mufti Shafi Usmani (رحمه الله) related about

﴾ والتين والزيتون ﴿

By the fig and the olive

﴾ وطور سينين ﴿

And [by] Mount Sinai

﴾ وهذا البلد الامين ﴿

And [by] this secure city [Makkah] (95:1-3)

That these verse takes an oath by four objects. Two of them are trees, the fig tree and the olive tree. [The third object] is Tur, the mount of Sinai, and the fourth object is the City of Makkah. The two trees have been specified because they possess abundant blessings and advantages in the same way as Tur and the City of Makkah possess abundant blessings. Some authorities say that the ‘fig’ and the ‘olive’ symbolize, in this context, the lands in which these trees predominate: that is, the countries bordering on the eastern part of the Mediterranean, especially Palestine and Syria. Most of the Prophets (عليهم السلام) lived and preached in these lands, including Holy Prophet Ibrahim (عليه السلام). The latter Prophet was made to migrate from here to Makkah. The oaths, in this way, comprehend all the holy places where Allah-inspired men were born and raised as Prophets. Syria was the land and home of all the Prophets (عليه السلام). Mount Sinai stresses specifically the messenger-ship of Musa (عليه السلام) where Allah spoke to him. ‘Peaceful City’ refers to Makkah, the birthplace and residence of the Final Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم).

95.7 Narrated Zira bin Khalifa (رضي الله عنه)

That I came to visit the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم) from Yamama  (central Arabia), so he presented Islam to us and we accepted it. On the next day, when we offered the dawn prayer, the Prophet recited Watteeni wazzaytoon (Surah 95) and Inna anzalnahu fee laylatialqadr (Surah 97).

(Mu’jam al-Sahaba, Dur al-Manthur)

95.8 Some people’s experience is that reciting Surah At-Tin frequently

  • After Isha can end hostility and start love between persons.
  • On food can remove its evil effects.
  • Can bring back a lost person.
  • Can result in the birth of a son.
    (إن شاء الله)
