22. Al-Hajj
22.1 Narrated ‘Imran bin Husain (رضي الله عنه)
When (the following) was revealed:
﴾ يا أيها الناس اتقوا ربكم إن زلزلة الساعة شيء عظيم ﴿
O mankind, fear your Lord. Indeed, the convulsion of the [final] Hour is a terrible thing.
On the Day you see it every nursing mother will be distracted from that [child] she was nursing, and every pregnant woman will abort her pregnancy, and you will see the people [appearing] intoxicated while they are not intoxicated; but the punishment of Allah is severe. (22:1-2)
– he said: “These Ayat were revealed while he (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) was on a journey and he said: ‘Do you know what Day this is?’ So they said: ‘Allah and His Messenger know better.’ He said: ‘That is the day when Allah says to Adam: Send forth those who are to be sent to the Fire. So he says: O Lord! How many are to be sent? He says: Nine-hundred and ninety-nine in the Fire, and one to Paradise. He said: “So the Muslims started crying. Then the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said: ‘Close your ranks and be straight forward, for there was never any Prophethood but there was a time of ignorance just before his advent, so the number will be taken from that time of ignorance, and if that is not enough, it will be made up of the hypocrites.
The parable of you and the other nations is that you are like a mark on the foreleg of an animal, or a mole on the flank of a camel.’ Then he said: ‘I hope that you will be a quarter of the people of Paradise.’ They said: Allahu Akbar. Then he said: ‘I hope that you will be a third of the people of Paradise.’ They said: Allahu Akbar. Then he said: ‘I hope that you will be half of the people of Paradise.’ They said: Allahu Akbar.” He said: “I do not know if he said two thirds or not.”
Jami` at-Tirmidhi Vol. 5, Book 44, Hadith 3168
22.2 Yahya related to me from Malik
From Nafi, the mawla of Ibn Umar that a man from Egypt told him that Umar ibn al-Khattab recited Surat al-Hajj (Sura 22) and prostrated twice in it, and then said, “This sura has been given special preference by having two prostrations in it.”
Muwatta Malik Book 15, Hadith 13
22.3 Yahya related to me from Malik
From Hisham ibn Urwa that his father heard Abdullah ibn Amir ibn Rabia say, “We prayed subh behind Umar ibn al-Khattab and he recited Sura Yusuf (Sura 12) and Surat al-Hajj (Sura 22) slowly.” I (Hisham’s father) said, “By Allah, then it must have been his habit to get up at the crack of dawn.” He said, “Of course.”
Muwatta Malik Book 3, Hadith 36
22.4 Narrated Ibn ‘Abbas (رضي الله عنه)
“When the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) was expelled from Makkah, Abu Bakr said: ‘They have driven out their Prophet to their own doom.’ So Allah, Most High, revealed:
﴾ أذن للذين يقاتلون بأنهم ظلموا وإن الله على نصرهم لقدير ﴿
Permission (to fight) is given to those who are fought against, because they have been wronged; and surely, Allah is able to give them victory (22:39).
So Abu Bakr said: ‘Then I knew that there would be fighting.'”
Jami` at-Tirmidhi Vol. 5, Book 44, Hadith 3171
22.5 Jabir (رضي الله عنه) said
“When a man enters his house or goes to bed, an angel and shaytan hasten to him. The angel says, ‘Seal it with good!’ The Shaytan says, ‘Seal it with evil.’ If he praises Allah and remembers Him, he chases the shaytan away and spends the night with him guarding him. When he wakes up, the angel and shaytan hasten to him and say the same thing. If he mentions Allah and says,
‘Praise be to Allah, who keeps firm hold of the heavens and earth, preventing them from vanishing away. And if they vanished no one could then keep hold of them. Certainly He is Most Forbearing, Ever-Forgiving.’ (35:41)
Praise be to Allah who holds back the sky preventing it from falling on the earth, except by His permission. Allah is All-Compassionate to mankind, Most Merciful.’ (22:65)
If he dies, he dies a martyr, If he gets up and prays, he prays in virtue.'”
Al-Adab Al-Mufrad Book 50, Hadith 1214
22.6 Yahya related to me from Malik
From Nafi from Abdullah ibn Umar that Umar ibn al-Khattab said, “No-one should leave the hajj until he has done Tawaf of the House, and Tawaf of the House is the final rite.” Malik said, commenting about Umar ibn al-Khattab’s saying ‘Tawaf of the House is the final rite,’ “In our opinion, and Allah knows best, that is because Allah, the Blessed and Exalted, says,
And whoever honors the symbols of Allah – indeed, it is from the piety of hearts (22:32)
and He says,
Then their place of sacrifice is at the ancient House (22:33)
and the place of all the rituals and where they end is therefore at the Ancient House.”
Muwatta Malik Book 20, Hadith 121
22.7 Yahya related to me from Malik
That the best of what he had heard about horses, mules, and donkeys was that they were not eaten because Allah, the Blessed, the Exalted, said,
“And horses, and mules and asses, for you to ride, and as an adornment. ” (Sura 16 ayat 8) .
He said, may He be Blessed and Exalted,
“In cattle, some of them you ride, and some of them you eat.” (Sura 6 ayat 79).
He said, the Blessed, the Exalted,
“Mention Allah’s name over what He has provided you of cattle, and eat of them and feed the beggar (al-qani) and the suppliant (al-mutarr). (Sura 22 ayat 34).
Malik said “Allah mentioned horses, mules, and donkeys for riding and adornment, and He mentioned cattle for riding and eating.” Malik said, “Al-qani also means the poor.”
Muwatta Malik Book 25, Hadith 15
22.8 Yahya related to me from Malik
From Hisham ibn Urwa that Abdullah ibn az-Zubayr used to say, “Know that the whole of Arafa is a standing-place except for the middle of Urana, and that the wholeof Muzdalifa is a standing-place except for the middle of Muhassir.” Malik said, “Allah, the Blessed and Exalted says,
‘There is to be no rafath, no fusuq and no jidal during the hajj.’ ” (Sura 2 ayat 197).
He added, “Rafath is sexual relations with women, and Allah knows best. Allah, the Blessed and Exalted says,
‘Rafath with your women is permitted to you on the night of the fast.’ (Sura 2 ayat 197).
Fusuq are sacrifices made to idols, and Allah knows best. Allah, the Blessed and Exalted, says,
‘Or a fisq offered up to other than Allah.’ (Sura 2 ayat 197)
Jidal (arguing) during the hajj refers to when the Quraysh used to stand near the mashar al-haram at Quzah in Muzdalifa, while the Arabs and others would stand at Arafa, and they would argue about who was the more correct. Allah, the Blessed and Exalted, says,
‘And we appointed a method of sacrifice for every nation, which they followed, so let them not dispute with you about the matter, and call to your Lord. Surely you are on a straight guidance.’ (Sura 22 ayat 67)
This is what jidal refers to in our opinion, and Allah knows best. This I have heard from the people of knowledge.”
Muwatta Malik Book 20, Hadith 176
22.9 It was narrated that Qais bin ‘Ubaid (رضي الله عنه) said
“I heard Abu Dharr swearing that these verses were revealed concerning those six people on the Day of Badr:
﴾ هذان خصمان اختصموا في ربهم ﴿
These two opponents (believers and disbelievers) dispute with each other about their Lord (22:19)
to the words
Verily, Allah does what he wills (22:14)
(that is) Hamzah bin ‘Abdul-Muttalib, ‘Ali bin Abi Talib, ‘Ubaidah bin Al-Harith, ‘Utbah bin Rabi’ah, Shaibah bin Rabi’ah and Al-Walid bin ‘Utbah. They argued with one another on the Day of Badr.”
Sunan Ibn Majah Vol. 4, Book 24, Hadith 2835
22.10 Ata’ (رضي الله عنه) said
Ibn ‘Abbas (رضي الله عنه) used to say that a pilgrim or non-pilgrim (one performing ‘Umar) who circumambulates the House is free from the responsibility of Ihram. I (Ibn Juraij, one of the narrators) said to ‘Ata’: On what authority does he (Ibn Abbas) say this? He said: On the authority of Allah’s words:”
Then their place of sacrifice is the Ancient House” (al-Qur’an, xxii. 33).
I said: It concerns the time after staying at ‘Arafat, whereupon he said: Ibn ‘Abbas (Allah be pleased with them) had stated (that the place of sacrifice is the Ancient House) ; it way be after staying at ‘Arafat or before (staying there). And he (Ibn Abbas) made this deduction I from the command of Allah’s Apostle (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) when he had ordered to put off Ihram on the occasion of the Farewell Pilgrimage.
22.11 Ibn Kathir related about
O People, if you should be in doubt about the Resurrection, then [consider that] indeed, We created you from dust, then from a sperm-drop, then from a clinging clot, and then from a lump of flesh, formed and unformed – that We may show you. And We settle in the wombs whom We will for a specified term (22:5)
It was recorded in the Two Sahihs that Ibn Mas’ud (رضي الله عنه) said, The Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم), who is the true and truly inspired one, told us: “Every one of you is collected in the womb of his mother for the first forty days, and then he becomes a clot for another forty days, and then a lump of flesh for another forty days. Then Allah sends an angel to write four words: He writes his provision, his deeds, his life span, and whether he will be blessed or wretched. Then he blows the soul into him.”
(Tafsir Ibn Kathir)
22.12 Ibn Kathir related about
Do you not see that to Allah prostrates whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth and the sun, the moon, the stars, the mountains, the trees, the moving creatures and many of the people? (22:18)
It was recorded that Abu Hurayrah (رضي الله عنه) said, The Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said: “When the son of Adam recites the Ayat containing the prostration, the Shaytan withdraws weeping and says, “Ah! Woe (to me)! the son of Adam was commanded to prostrate and he prostrated, so Paradise is his; I was commanded to prostrate and I refused, so I am doomed to Hell.” This was recorded by Muslim.
(Tafsir Ibn Kathir)
22.13 Ibn Kathir related about
They will be adorned therein with bracelets of gold and pearl, and their garments therein will be silk (22:23)
The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said in the agreed-upon Hadith: “The jewelry of the believer (in Paradise) will reach as far as his Wudu’ reached.”
In the Sahih, it says: “Do not wear fine silk or gold embroidery in this world, for whoever wears them in this world, will not wear them in the Hereafter.”
(Tafsir Ibn Kathir)
22.14 Ibn Kathir related about
And they are guided to the path of Him Who is Worthy of all Praises (22:24)
It says in the Sahih Hadith: “They will be inspired with words of glorification and praise, just as they are inspired with breath.”
(Tafsir Ibn Kathir)
22.15 Ibn Kathir related about
And mention the name of Allah on known days over what He has provided for them of [sacrificial] animals (22:28)
Shu’bah and Hushaym narrated from Abu Bishr from Sa`id from Ibn Abbas, “The appointed days are the ten days (of Dhul-Hijjah).”
Al-Bukhari recorded from Ibn Abbas that the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said: “No deeds are more virtuous than deeds done on these days. They said, “Not even Jihad for the sake of Allah!”He said, “Not even Jihad for the sake of Allah, unless a man goes out risking himself and his wealth for the sake of Allah, and does not come back with anything.”
Imam Ahmad recorded that Ibn Umar said, The Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said: “There are no days that are greater before Allah or in which deeds are more beloved to Him than these ten days, so increase your Tahlil, Takbir, and Tahmid during these days.”
These ten days include the day of `Arafah. It was recorded in Sahih Muslim that Abu Qatadah said, “The Messenger of Allah was asked about fasting on the day of ‘Arafah, and he said, “I hope by Allah that it will be an expiation for the previous year and the coming year.”
These ten days include the day of An-Nahr (Sacrifice), which is the greatest day of Hajj, and it was recorded in a Hadith that it is the most virtuous day to Allah.
(Tafsir Ibn Kathir)
22.16 Ibn Kathir related about
So avoid the uncleanliness of idols and avoid false statement (22:30)
In the Two Sahihs it was reported from Abu Bakrah that the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said: “Shall I not tell you about the worst of major sins? We said, “Yes, O Messenger of Allah.” He said: “Associating others with Allah, disobeying one’s parents.” He was reclining, then he sat up and said: “And indeed giving false statements, and indeed bearing false witness…” and he kept on repeating it until we wished that he would stop.’
Imam Ahmad recorded that Khuraym bin Fatik Al-Asadi said, “The Messenger of Allah prayed As-Subh (Al-Fajr), and when he had finished, he stood up and said: “Bearing false witness is on a par with the association of others with Allah.”
(Tafsir Ibn Kathir)
22.17 Ibn Kathir related about
And indeed, a day with your Lord is like a thousand years of those which you count. (22:47)
Ibn Abi Hatim recorded from Abu Hurayrah that the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said: “The poor among the Muslims will enter Paradise half a day before the rich – five hundred years. This was recorded by At-Tirmidhi and An-Nasa’i from the Hadith of Ath-Thawri from Muhammad bin ‘Amr.
Abu Dawud recorded at the end of Book of Al-Malahim in his Sunan from Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas that the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said: “I hope that it will not be too much for my Ummah if Allah delays them for half a day. It was said to Sa’d, “What does half a day mean?” He said, “Five hundred years.”
(Tafsir Ibn Kathir)
22.18 Ibn Kathir related about
And those who emigrated for the cause of Allah and then were killed or died – Allah will surely provide for them a good provision. And indeed, it is Allah who is the best of providers (22:58)
Ibn Abi Hatim recorded that Shurahbil bin As-Simt said: We spent a long time besieging a stronghold in the land of the Romans. Salman Al-Farisi, may Allah be pleased with him, passed by me and said, I heard the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) say: “Whoever dies guarding the borders of Islam, Allah will give him a reward like that reward (of martyr) and will provide for him and keep him safe from trials.”
22.19 | SOME AHADITH ON HAJJ |
22.19.1 Narrated Abu Huraira (رضي الله عنه)
The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said, “Whoever performs Hajj for Allah’s pleasure and does not have sexual relations with his wife, and does not do evil or sins then he will return (after Hajj free from all sins) as if he were born anew.” 22.19.2 Abdullah (bin Mas’ud) (رضي الله عنه) narrated that: The Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said: “Alternate between Hajj and Umrah; for those two remove poverty and sins just as the bellows removes filth from iron, gold, and silver – and there is no reward for Al-Hajj Al-Mabrur except for Paradise.” 22.19.3 Narrated `Aisha (رضي الله عنها) (That she said), “O Allah’s Messenger (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)! We consider Jihad as the best deed. Should we not fight in Allah’s Cause?” He said, “The best Jihad (for women) is Hajj-Mabrur (i.e. Hajj which is done according to the Prophet’s tradition and is accepted by Allah). 22.19.4 Abu Hurairah (رضي الله عنه) narrated that The Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said: “Al-Yawmul-Maw’ud (the Promised Day) is the Day of Resurrection, and Al-Yawmul-Mashhud (the Attended Day) is the Day of Arafah, and Ash-Shahid (the witness) is Friday.” He said: “The sun does not rise nor set, upon a day that is more virtuous than it. In it, there is an hour in which no believing worshiper makes a supplication to Allah for good, except that Allah answers it for him, and he does not seek Allah’s aid for something, except that He aids him in it.” Jami` at-Tirmidhi Vol. 5, Book 44, Hadith 3339 22.19.5 Abu Hurairah (رضي الله عنه) said: The Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said: ‘The guests of Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, are three: The warrior, the pilgrim performing Hajj, and the pilgrim performing Umrah.’ 22.19.6 ‘Aishah (رضي الله عنها) reported: The Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said, “There is no day on which Allah sets free more slaves from Hell than He does on the Day of ‘Arafah.” Riyad as-Salihin Book 11, Hadith 7 22.19.7 Ali (رضي الله عنه) narrated that : The Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said: “Whoever has the provisions and the means to convey him to Allah’s House and he does not perform Hajj, then it does not matter if he dies as a Jew or a Christian. That is because Allah said in His Book: ‘And Hajj to the House is a duty that mankind owes to Allah, for whomever is able to bear the journey.’ 22.19.8 Narrated Abu Huraira (رضي الله عنه) The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) was asked, ‘Which is the best deed?’ He said, ‘To believe in Allah and His Apostle.’ He was then asked, ‘Which is the next (in goodness)?’ He said, ‘To participate in Jihad in Allah’s Cause.’ He was then asked, ‘Which is the next?’ He said, ‘To perform Hajj-Mabrur.’ 22.19.9 Narrated Ibn ‘Umar (رضي الله عنه) That the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said: “Islam is based upon five: the testimony of La ilaha il Allah, and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, the establishment of the Salat, giving the Zakat, fasting (the month of) Ramadan, and performing Hajj to the House.” |
