12. Yusuf

12.1 The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم) said,

‘Teach your relatives the recitation of Surah Yusuf, for, any Muslim who recites it or teaches it to his family and slaves, Allah shall ease for him the agony of death, and give him the strength that will prevent him from envying a fellow Muslim’

(Ibn Asakir)

12.2 Yahya related to me from Malik

From Yahya ibn Said and Rabia ibn Abi Abd arRahman from al-Qasim ibn Muhammad that al Furafisa ibn Umayral-Hanafi said, “I only learnt Surah Yusuf from the recitation of it by Uthman ibn Affan (رضي الله عنه) in the subh prayer because of the great number of times he repeated it to us.”

Muwatta Malik Book 3, Hadith 37

12.3 Yahya related to me from Malik

From Hisham ibn Urwa that his father heard Abdullah ibn Amir ibn Rabia say, “We prayed subh behind Umar ibn al-Khattab (رضي الله عنه) and he recited surah Yusuf (Sura 12) and surat al-Hajj (Sura 22) slowly.” I (Hisham’s father) said, “By Allah, then it must have been his habit to get up at the crack of dawn.” He said, “Of course.”

Muwatta Malik Book 3, Hadith 36

12.4 Ibn Kathir (رحمه الله) related about

He said, “My Lord, prison is more to my liking than that to which they invite me. And if You do not avert from me their plan, I might incline toward them and [thus] be of the ignorant.”

So his Lord responded to him and averted from him their plan. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Knowing. (12:33-34)

It is recorded in the Two Sahihs that the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم) said, “Allah will give shade to seven, on the Day when there will be no shade but His: (i) A just ruler, (ii) a youth who has been brought up in the worship of Allah, (iii) a man whose heart is attached to the Masjid, from the time he goes out of the Masjid until he gets back to it, (iv) two persons who love each other only for Allah’s sake and they meet and part in Allah’s cause only, (v) a man who gives charitable gifts so secretly that his left hand does not know what his right hand has given, (vi) a man who refuses the call of a charming woman of noble birth for illicit intercourse with her and says: ‘I am afraid of Allah’ and (vii) a person who remembers Allah in seclusion and his eyes are then flooded with tears.”

(Tafsir Ibn Kathir)

12.5 Imam Ibn Sunni and Daylami (رحمهم الله) narrated from Hazrat Ibn Abbas (رضي الله عنه) that
The Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم) said, “When it becomes difficult for the woman to deliver the child, then take a clean utensil and the following verses should be written on it

Then it should be washed and the woman should be made to drink a portion of the water
and the remaining should be sprinkled on her belly and private part.

(Dur al-Manthur)

12.6 Duas

My Lord, prison is more to my liking than that to which they invite me. And if You do not avert from me their plan, I might incline toward them and [thus] be of the ignorant (12:33)

My Lord, You have given me [something] of sovereignty and taught me of the interpretation of dreams. Creator of the heavens and earth, You are my protector in this world and in the Hereafter. Cause me to die a Muslim and join me with the righteous (12:101)
