1. Quran

So bear patiently (O Muhammad ﷺ) what they say, and glorify the praises of your Lord before the rising of the sun, and before its setting, and during some of the hours of the night, and at the sides of the day (an indication for the five compulsory congregational prayers), that you may become pleased with the reward which Allah shall give you. (Taha 20:130)

O you who have believed, let those whom your right hands possess and those who have not [yet] reached puberty among you ask permission of you [before entering] at three times: before the dawn prayer and when you put aside your clothing [for rest] at noon and after the night prayer. (An-Nur 24:58)

Proclaim His praise in the night and at the end of every prayer. (Qaf 50:40)

And from [part of] the night, pray with it as additional [worship] for you; it is expected that your Lord will resurrect you to a praised station. (Al-Isra 17:79)

And during the night prostrate to Him and exalt Him a long [part of the] night. (Al-Insan 76:26)

And to Him is [due all] praise throughout the heavens and the earth. And [exalted is He] at night and when you are at noon. (Ar-Rum 30:18)

Indeed, the hours of the night are more effective for concurrence [of heart and tongue] and more suitable for words. (Al-Muzzammil 73:6)

They used to sleep but little of the night. (Adh-Dhariyat 51:17)

They arise from [their] beds; they supplicate their Lord in fear and aspiration, and from what We have provided them, they spend. (As-Sajdah 32:16)

2. Hadith

2.1 ‘Uthman b. ‘Affan (رضي الله عنه) reported the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) as saying,

“If anyone says the night prayer in congregation, he is like one who keeps vigil (in prayer) till midnight; and he who says both the night and dawn prayer in congregation is like one who keeps vigil (in prayer) the whole night.”

(Sunan Abi Dawud 555)

2.2 It was narrated that Abu Hurairah (رضي الله عنه) said: “The Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said:

‘The most burdensome prayers for the hypocrites are the ‘Isha’ prayer and the Fajr prayer. If only they knew what (reward) there is in them, they would come to them even if they had to crawl’.”

(Sunan Ibn Majah 797)

2.3 Abu Hurairah (رضي الله عنه) narrated that : Allah’s Messenger (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said:

“If it were not that it would be a hardship on my Ummah, then I would have ordered you to delay Isha until the third of the night, or its half.”

(Jami` at-Tirmidhi 167)

2.4 Narrated Abu Huraira (رضي الله عنه): Allah’s Messenger (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said,

“If the people knew what is the reward of making the call (for the prayer) and (of being in) the first row (in the prayer), and if they found no other way to get this privilege except by casting lots, they would certainly cast lots for it. If they knew the reward of the noon prayer, they would race for it, and if they knew the reward of the morning (i.e. Fajr) and `Isha prayers, they would present themselves for the prayer even if they had to crawl to reach there.”

(Sahih al-Bukhari 2689)

2.5 Narrated Buraydah ibn al-Hasib (رضي الله عنه): The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said:

“Give good tidings to those who walk to the mosques in darkness for having a perfect light on the Day of Judgment.”

(Sunan Abi Dawud 561)

2.6 Abu Bakr bin Abi Musa reported on the authority of his father (رضی الله عنهم) that the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said:

“He who observed two prayers at two cool (hours) would enter Paradise.”

(Sahih Muslim 635 a)

2.7 Abu Barzah (رضي الله عنه) said:

“The Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) disliked going to bed before the ‘Isha’ (night) prayer and indulging in conversation after it.”

(Riyad as-Salihin 1746)

2.8 Narrated `Abdullah bin `Amr bin Al-`As (رضي الله عنه): Allah’s Messenger (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) told me,

“The most beloved prayer to Allah is that of David and the most beloved fasts to Allah are those of David. He used to sleep for half of the night and then pray for one third of the night and again sleep for its sixth part and used to fast on alternate days.”

(Sahih al-Bukhari 1131)

2.9 It was narrated that Jabir bin ‘Abdullah (رضي الله عنه) said: The Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said:

‘The mother of Sulaiman bin Dawud said to Sulaiman (عليهم السلام): “O my son, do not sleep too much at night, for sleeping too much at night will leave a man poor on the Day of Resurrection’.”

(Sunan Ibn Majah Vol. 1, Book 5, Hadith 1332)

2.10 Narrated Al-Bara (رضي الله عنه):

The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) was on a journey and recited in one of the first two rak`at of the `Isha’ prayer “Wa t-teeni wa z-zaitun.” (Surah 95)

(Sahih al-Bukhari 767)

2.11 It was narrated from Abdullah bin Buraidah, from his father (رضی الله عنهم), that:

The Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) used to recite ‘By the sun and its brightness’ (Ash-Shams 91) and similar Surahs in Isha’.

(Sunan an-Nasa’i 999)

2.12 It was narrated that ‘Amr bin ‘Abasah (رضي الله عنه) said: “I came to the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) and said:

‘O Messenger of Allah, who became a Muslim with you?’ He said: ‘A free man and a slave.’ I said: ‘Is there any hour of the night that is closer to Allah than another?’ He said: ‘Yes, the last half of the night’.”

(Sunan Ibn Majah Vol. 1, Book 5, Hadith 1364)

2.13 Abu Huraira (رضي الله عنه) reported Allah’s Messenger (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) as saying:

Our Lord, the Blessed and the Exalted, descends every night to the lowest heaven when one-third of the latter part of the night is left, and says: Who supplicates Me so that I may answer him? Who asks Me so that I may give to him? Who asks Me forgiveness so that I may forgive him?

(Sahih Muslim 758 a)

2.14 It was narrated from Abu Hurairah (رضي الله عنه) that the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said:

“Whoever fasts during Ramadan” and according to the Hadith of Qutaibah, the Prophet said: “Whoever spends the nights of Ramadan in prayer (Qiyam) out of faith and in the hope of reward, he will be forgiven his previous sins, and whoever spends the night of Lailat Al-Qadr in prayer out of faith and in the hope of reward, he will be forgiven his previous sins.”

(Sunan an-Nasa’i 2202)

‘Whoever prays twenty Rak’ah between Maghrib and ‘Isha’, Allah will build for him a house in Paradise.’

(Sunan Ibn Majah Vol. 1, Book 5, Hadith 1373)

2.16 Narrated ‘Aishah (رضي الله عنها):

The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) delayed (the ‘Isha’ prayer) one night till a great part of the night passed, then he went out and offered the prayer, and said, “This is the proper time for it; were it not that I would impose a burden on my followers.” .

(Bulugh al-Maram Book 2, Hadith 8)

2.17 ‘Abdullah bin Mas’ud (رضي الله عنه) said:

“We were fighting a battle and the idolators kept us from praying Zuhr, ‘Asr, Maghrib and ‘Isha’. When the idolators went away, the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) commanded a caller to say Iqamah for Zuhr prayer, and we prayed. Then he said the Iqamah for ‘Asr, and we prayed, and he said the Iqamah for Maghrib and we prayed, and he said the Iqamah for ‘Isha’ and we prayed. Then he (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) went around among us and said: ‘There is no group on Earth who is remembering Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, except you’.”

(Sunan an-Nasa’i Vol. 1, Book 7, Hadith 664)

2.18 Abu Huraira (رضي الله عنه) reported:

The Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) found some people absenting from certain prayers and he said: I intend that I order (a) person to lead people in prayer, and then go to the persons who do not join the (congregational prayer) and then order their houses to be burnt by the bundles of fuel. If one amongst them were to know that he would find a fat fleshy bone he would attend the night prayer.

(Sahih Muslim 651 a)

2.19 It was narrated from ‘Umar bin Khattab (رضي الله عنه) that: The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) used to say:

‘Whoever persists in performing twelve Rak’ah from the Sunnah, a house will be built for him in Paradise: four before the Zuhr, two Rak’ah after Zuhr, two Rak’ah after Maghrib, two Rak’ah after the ‘Isha’ and two Rak’ah before Fajr’.

(Sunan Ibn Majah Vol. 1, Book 5, Hadith 1140)

Mu’adh bin Jabal led his companions (رضی الله عنهم) for the ‘Isha’ and he made the prayer too long for them. The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said: “Recite ‘By the sun and its brightness’ (Ash-Shams 91), ‘Glorify the Name of your Lord, the Most High’ (Al-A’la 87), ‘By the night as it envelops’ (Al-Lail 92) or ‘Read! In the Name of your Lord Who has created’ (Al-‘Alaq 96).”

(Sunan Ibn Majah Vol. 1, Book 5, Hadith 836)

2.22 Kharijab bin Hudhafah (رضي الله عنه) narrated: Allah’s Messenger (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) came out to us and he said:

‘Indeed Allah has assisted you with a Salat that is better for you than red camels: Al-Witr which Allah made for you between the Isha prayer till Al-Fajr has begun.’

(Jami` at-Tirmidhi 452)

2.23 Narrated ‘Abdullah bin Buraidah from his father (رضی الله عنهم): Allah’s Messenger (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said:

“The Witr is a duty, so he who does not offer it, is not one of us.”

(Bulugh al-Maram Book 2, Hadith 279)

2.24 It was narrated that Ali (رضي الله عنه) said: “The Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said:

“O people of the Qur’an, pray witr, for Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, is Witr (One) and loves Al-Witr (the odd numbered).'”

(Sunan an-Nasa’i 1675)

2.25 Hadhrat Abu Darda (رضي الله عنه) narrates that the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) once said to him,

“Whoever prays Isha in congregation, and prays four rak‘ahs before he leaves the mosque, it will be equivalent to Laylat al-Qadr.”

(Mu‘jam al-Awsat 5/245)

2.27 Ibn ‘Abbaas (رضي الله عنه) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said:

“Whoever prays four rak‘ahs after ‘Isha’, reciting in the first two rak‘ahs ‘Qul yaa ayyuha’l kaafiroon’ (Soorat al-Kaafiroon 109) and ‘Qul Huwa Allahu Ahad’ (Soorat al-Ikhlaas 112), and reciting in the last two rak‘ahs ‘Tanzeel as-Sajdah’ (Soorat as-Sajdah 32) and ‘Tabaarak Alladhi bi yadihi’l-mulk’ (Soorat al-Mulk 67), they will be recorded for him like four rak‘ahs on Laylat al-Qadr.”

“Four rak‘ahs before Zuhr are equivalent (in virtue) to four like them after Isha, and four rak‘ahs after Isha are equivalent (in virtue) to four like them on Laylat al-Qadr.”

(Mu‘jam al-Awsat 3/141)

2.29 It was narrated from Al-Bara’ ibn ‘Aazib (رضي الله عنه) that the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said:

“Whoever prays four rak‘ahs before Zuhr, it is as if he praying them as Tahajjud at night; whoever prays (four rak‘ahs) after ‘Isha’, they will be equivalent (in virtue) to four like them on Laylat al-Qadr. And if one Muslim meets another and takes him by the hand, and they are both sincere, they will not part until they have both been forgiven.”

(Mu‘jam al-Awsat 6/254)

2.30 It was narrated that Yahya ibn Abi Katheer (رضي الله عنه) said:

The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) instructed his companions to recite ‘Alif-Laam-Meem as-Sajdah’ (Soorat as-Sajdah 32) and ‘Tabaarak Alladhi bi yadihi’l-mulk’ (Soorat al-Mulk 67), for each verse of them is equivalent to seventy verses of other soorahs, and whoever recites them after Isha, it will be for him equivalent in virtue to reciting them on Laylat al-Qadr.

(Musannaf ‘Abd ar-Razzaaq 3/382)

3. Ulama

3.1 ‘Abdullah ibn’ Umar (رضي الله عنه) narrated that

“When we did not find a person present in the Fajr and Isha prayers, we did not think well of him.”

(Sahih Ibn Hibban 2099)

3.2 Hadhrat Salmaan (رضي الله عنه) says,

“After Ishaa the people get divided into three groups. There are some for whom the night is a source of blessing and gain. They are those who spend it in the worship of Allah, while other people are asleep. For them the night brings great reward from their Lord. There are others who turn their night into a burden and curse for themselves, for they indulge in various dark deeds in the dead of night. To them the night brings woe and misery. There is the third group of people who go to bed immediately after Ishaa; they  neither gain nor lose.”

3.7 ‘Imraan ibn Khaalid al-Khuzaa‘i said: I was sitting with ‘Ata when a man came to him and said: O Abu Muhammad, Tawoos (رحمهم الله) is claiming that

Whoever prays Isha then prays two rak‘ahs after it, reciting in the first rak‘ah Tanzeel as-Sajdah (Soorat as-Sajdah 32) and in the second rak‘ah ‘Tabaarak Alladhi bi yadihi’l-mulk’ (Soorat al-Mulk 67), there will be written for him (a reward) like that standing in prayer on Laylat al-Qadr.

‘Ata’ said: Tawoos is telling the truth; after that I never omitted to do that.
