7. Al-Aaraf
7.1 It was narrated from Aishah that:
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) recited Surat Al-A’raf in maghrib and split it between two rak’ahs.
7.2 Marwan bin Al-Hakam narrated that:
Zaid bin Thabit said: “Why do I see you reciting short surahs in Maghrib when I saw the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) reciting the longer of the two long surahs in it?” I said: “O Abu Abdullah, what is the longer of the two long surahs?” He said: “Al-A’raf.”
7.3 It was narrated from Zaid bin Thabit that :
He said to Marwan: “O Abu Abdul-Malik, do you recite: ‘Say: He is Allah, (the) One’ and ‘Verily, We have granted you Al-Kawthar’ in maghrib?” He said: “Yes.” He (Zaid) said: “I swear by Allah, I saw the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) reciting the longer of the two long surahs in it: ‘Alif-Lam-Mim-Sad.'”
7.4 Marwan b. a-hakkam said:
Zaid b. Thabit asked me: Why do you recite short surahs in the sunset prayer? I saw the Messenger of Allah (May peace be upon him) reciting two long surahs at the sunset prayers. I asked him: which are those two long surahs? He replied: Al-A’raf(surah vii) and al-an’am(surah vi). I ( the narrator Ibn Juraij) asked Ibn Mulaikah (about these surahs): He said on his own accord: Al-Ma’idah (surah v.) and Al-A’raf (surah vii.)
7.5 ‘Abdullah ibn az-Zubayr said on the minbar,
“Make allowances for people and command what is right and turn away from the ignorant.” (7: 199) He said, “By Allah, we are only commanded by this ayat to accept people’s character. By Allah, I will accept people’s character as long as I am with them.
7.6 Narrated Sulaiman bin Harb:
“Hammad bin Salamah narrated to us, from Thabit, from Anas, that the Prophet (ﷺ) recited this Ayah: So when his Lord appeared to the mountain, He made it collapse to dust (7:143) – Hammad said: “Like this.” Sulaiman held his thumb over the tip of his finger on the right hand (so that only the tip of one finger was protruding) – and he [the Prophet (ﷺ)] said: “So the mountain fainted. ‘And Musa fell down unconscious.'”
Jami` at-Tirmidhi Vol. 5, Book 44, Hadith 3074
7.7 Ibn ‘Abbas (May Allah be pleased with them) reported:
‘Uyainah bin Hisn came to Al-Madinah and stayed with his nephew Hurr bin Qais who was among those whom Umar (May Allah be pleased with him) showed favour to. The knowledgeable people (Qurra’), whether they were old or young, had the privilege of joining Umar’s council and he used to consult them. ‘Uyainah said to Hurr: “My nephew, the Leader of the Believers shows favour to you. Will you obtain permission for me to sit with him?” Hurr asked ‘Umar and he accorded permission. When ‘Uyainah came into the presence of ‘Umar, he addressed him thus: “O son of Khattab, you neither bestow much on us nor deal with us justly.” ‘Umar (May Allah be pleased with him) got angry and was about to beat him up when Hurr said: ”O Leader of the Believers, Allah said to His Prophet (ﷺ): ‘ Show forgiveness, enjoin what is good, and turn away from the foolish (i.e., don’t punish them).’ (7:199) This one is from the ignorants. When Hurr recited this, ‘Umar became quite motionless in his seat. He always adhered strictly to the Book of Allah.
Riyad as-Salihin Book 1, Hadith 50
7.8 Narrated Muslim bin Yasar Al-Juhani:
that ‘Umar bin Al-Khattab was asked about this Ayah: And when your Lord brought forth from the Children of Adam, from their loins, their seed and made them testify as to themselves: “Am I not your Lord?” They said: “Yes! We testify,” lest you should say on the Day of Resurrection: ‘Verily, we have been unaware of this (7:172).'” So ‘Umar bin Al-Khattab said: “I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) being asked about it. So the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: ‘Indeed Allah created Adam, then He wiped his back with His Right Hand, and his offspring came out of him. So he said: “I created these for Paradise, and they will do the deeds of the people of Paradise.” Then He wiped his back, and his offspring came out of him. So He said: “I created these for the Fire, and they will do the deeds of the people of the Fire.” A man said: ‘Then of what good is doing deeds O Messenger of Allah!’ The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: ‘Verily, when Allah created a man for Paradise, He makes him perform the deeds of the people of Paradise, until he dies doing one of the deeds of the people of Paradise. So Allah will admit him into Paradise. And when He created a man for the Fire, He makes him perform the deeds of the people of the Fire until he dies doing the deeds of the people of the Fire. So Allah will enter him into the Fire.'”
Jami` at-Tirmidhi Vol. 5, Book 44, Hadith 3075
7.9 It was narrated from ‘Abdur-Rahman bin Abi Laila that his father Abu Laila said:
“I was sitting with the Prophet (ﷺ) when a Bedouin came to him and said: ‘I have a brother who is sick.’ He said: ‘What is the matter with your brother?’ He said: ‘He suffers from a slight mental derangement.’ He said: ‘Go and bring him.’” He said: “(So he went) and he brought him. He made him sit down in front of him and I heard him seeking refuge for him with Fatihatil-Kitab; four Verses from the beginning of Al-Baqarah, two Verses from its middle: ‘And your Ilah (God) is One Ilah (God – Allah),’ [2:163] and Ayat Al-Kursi; and three Verses from its end; a Verse from Al ‘Imran, I think it was: ‘Allah bears witness that La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He),’ [3:18] a Verse from Al-A’raf: ‘Indeed, your Lord is Allah,’ [7:54] a Verse from Al-Mu’minun: ‘And whoever invokes (or worships), besides Allah, any other ilah (god), of whom he has no proof,’[23:117] a Verse from Al-Jinn: ‘And He, exalted is the Majesty of our Lord,’ [72:3] ten Verses from the beginning of As-Saffat; three Verses from the end of Al-Hashr; (then) ‘Say: He is Allah, (the) One,’ [112:1] and Al-Mu’awwidhatain. Then the Bedouin stood up, healed, and there was nothing wrong with him.”
Sunan Ibn Majah Vol. 4, Book 31, Hadith 3549
7.10 Ibn Abbas reported
During the pre-Islamic days women circumambulated the Ka’ba nakedly, and said: Who would provide cloth to cover the one who is circumambulating the Ka’ba so that she would cover her private parts? And then she would say: Today will be exposed the whole or the part and what is exposed I shall not make it lawful. It was in this connection that the verse was revealed:” Adorn yourself at every place of worship” (vii. 31).
7.11 Abu Sa’id al-Khudri and Abu Huraira both reported Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) as saying:
There would be an announcer (in Paradise) who would make this announcement: Verily there is in store for you (everlasting) health and that you should never fall ill and that you live (for ever) and do not die at all. And that you would remain young and never grow old. And that you would always live in affluent circumstances and never become destitute, as words of Allah, the Exalted and Glorious, are:” And it would be announced to them: This is the Paradise. You have been made to inherit it for what you used to do”. (VII; 43)
7.12 Yahya said that he heard Malik say,
“The best of what I have heard about the testament of a pregnant woman and about what settlements she is permitted in her property is that the pregnant woman is like the sick person. When the illness is light, and one does not fear for the sick person, he does with his property what he likes. If the illness is such that his life is feared for, he can only dispose of a third of his estate.”
He said, “It is the same with a woman who is pregnant. The beginning of pregnancy is good news and joy. It is not illness and no fear because Allah the Blessed, the Exalted, said in His Book, ‘We gave her good news of Ishaq and after Ishaq, Yaqub.’ (Sura ll ayat 71). And He said, ‘She bore a light burden and passed by with it, but when she became heavy, they called upon Allah, their Lord, “If you give us a good-doing son, we will be among the thankful.” ‘(Sura 7 ayat 189).
“When a pregnant woman becomes heavy, she is only permitted to dispose of a third of her estate. The beginning of this restriction is after six months. Allah, the Blessed, the Exalted, said in His Book, ‘Mothers suckle their children for two complete years.’ And He said, ‘his bearing and weaning are thirty months.’ (Sura 2 ayat 233).
“When six months have passed for the pregnant woman from the day she conceived, she is only permitted to dispose of a third of her property.”
Yahya said that he heard Malik say, “A man who is advancing in the row for battle, can only dispose of a third of his property. He is in the same position as a pregnant woman or an ill person who is feared for, as long as he is in that situation.”
Muwatta Malik Book 37, Hadith 4
7.13 Ibn Kathir related about
[Satan] said, “Because You have put me in error, I will surely sit in wait for them on Your straight path
Then I will come to them from before them and from behind them and on their right and on their left, and You will not find most of them grateful [to You].” (7:16-17)
Imam Ahmad recorded that Saburah bin Abi Al-Fakih said that he heard the Messenger of Allah saying, “Shaytan sat in wait for the Son of Adam in all his paths. He sat in the path of Islam, saying, `Would you embrace Islam and abandon your religion and the religion of your forefathers!’ However, the Son of Adam disobeyed Shaytan and embraced Islam. So Shaytan sat in the path of Hijrah (migration in the cause of Allah), saying, `Would you migrate and leave your land and sky!’ But the parable of the Muhajir is that of a horse in his stamina So, he disobeyed Shaytan and migrated. So Shaytan sat in the path of Jihad, against one’s self and with his wealth, saying, `If you fight, you will be killed, your wife will be married and your wealth divided.’So he disobeyed him and performed Jihad. The Prophet peace be upon him then said; Therefore, whoever among them (Children of Adam) does this and dies, it will be a promise from Allah that He admits him into Paradise. If he is killed, it will be a promise from Allah that He admits him into Paradise. If he drowns, it will be a promise from Allah that He admits him into Paradise. If the animal breaks his neck, it will be a promise from Allah that He admits him into Paradise.
Imam Ahmad narrated that Abdullah bin Umar said, “The Messenger of Allah used to often recite this supplication in the morning and when the night falls,
O Allah! I ask You for well-being in this life and the Hereafter. O Allah! I ask You for pardon and well-being in my religion, life, family and wealth. O Allah! Cover my errors and reassure me in times of difficulty. O Allah! Protect me from before me, from behind me, from my right, from my left and from above me. I seek refuge with Your greatness from being killed from below me.”
Waki` commented (about being killed from below), “This refers to earthquakes.” Abu Dawud, An-Nasa’i, Ibn Majah, Ibn Hibban and Al-Hakim collected this Hadith.
(Tafsir Ibn Kathir)
7.14 Ibn Kathir related about
O children of Adam, take your adornment at every masjid, and eat and drink, but be not excessive. Indeed, He likes not those who commit excess (7:31)
This Ayah, as well as the Sunnah, encourage wearing the best clothes when praying, especially for Friday and `Id prayers. It is also recommended (for men) to wear perfume for prayer, because it is adornment, and to use Siwak for it is part of what completes adornment. The best color for clothes is white, for Imam Ahmad narrated that Ibn Abbas said that the Messenger of Allah said, “Wear white clothes, for it is among your best clothes, and also wrap your dead with it. And Ithmid (antimony) is among the best of your Kuhl, for it clears the sight and helps the hair grow.”
Imam Ahmad recorded that Al-Miqdam bin Ma`dikarib Al-Kindi said that he heard the Messenger of Allah saying, “The Son of Adam will not fill a pot worse for himself than his stomach. It is enough for the Son of Adam to eat a few bites that strengthens his spine. If he likes to have more, then let him fill a third with food, a third with drink and leave a third for his breathing.”
(Tafsir Ibn Kathir)
7.15 Ibn Kathir related about
Indeed, your Lord is Allah , who created the heavens and earth in six days and then established Himself above the Throne. He covers the night with the day, [another night] chasing it rapidly; and [He created] the sun, the moon, and the stars, subjected by His command. Unquestionably, His is the creation and the command; blessed is Allah , Lord of the worlds. (7:54)
Imam Ahmad recorded Abu Hurayrah saying: Allah’s Messenger told me: “Allah created the dust on Saturday, and He created the mountains on Sunday, and He created the trees on Monday, and He created the unpleasant things on Tuesday and He created the light on Wednesday and He spread the creatures through out it on Thursday and He created Adam after Asr on Friday. He was the last created during the last hour of Friday, between Asr and the night.”
Abu Ad-Darda’ said a supplication, that was also attributed to the Prophet,
O Allah! Yours is all the kingdom, all the praise, and Yours is the ownership of all affairs. I ask You for all types of good and seek refuge with You from all types of evil.
(Tafsir Ibn Kathir)
7.16 Ibn Kathir related about
Say, [O Muhammad], “O mankind, indeed I am the Messenger of Allah to you all, [from Him] to whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. There is no deity except Him; He gives life and causes death.” So believe in Allah and His Messenger, the unlettered prophet, who believes in Allah and His words, and follow him that you may be guided. (7:158)
Imam Ahmad recorded that Ibn Abbas said that the Messenger of Allah said,”I have been given five things which were not given to any Prophet before me, and I do not say it out of pride. I was sent to all mankind (their) black and white alike. Allah made me victorious by fright, (by His frightening my enemies) for a distance of one month’s journey. The spoils of war are lawful for me, yet it was not lawful for anyone else before me. The earth has been made for me (and for my followers) a place for praying and a thing to perform purification with. I have been given the Shafa’ah (right of intercession), and I saved it for my Ummah on the Day of Resurrection. Therefore, the Shafa’ah will reach those who associate none with Allah in worship.”
7.17 Ibn Kathir related about
And to Allah belong the best names, so invoke Him by them. And leave [the company of] those who practice deviation concerning His names. They will be recompensed for what they have been doing (7:180)
Abu Hurayrah narrated that the Messenger of Allah said, “Verily, Allah has ninety-nine Names, a hundred less one; whoever counts (and preserves) them, will enter Paradise. Allah is Witr (One) and loves Al-Witr (the odd numbered things).” The Two Sahihs collected this Hadith.
We should state that Allah’s Names are not restricted to only ninety-nine. For instance, in his Musnad, Imam Ahmad recorded that Abdullah bin Mas`ud said that the Messenger of Allah said; ” Any person who is overcome by sadness or grief and supplicates,
`O Allah! I am Your servant, son of Your female servant. My forelock is in Your Hand. Your decision concerning me shall certainly come to pass. Just is Your Judgement about me. I invoke You by every Name that You have and that You called Yourself by, sent down in Your Book, taught to any of Your creatures, or kept with You in the knowledge of the Unseen that is with You. Make the Glorious Qur’an the spring of my heart, the light of my chest, the remover of my grief and the dissipater of my concern.’
Surely, Allah will remove his grief and sadness and exchange them for delight. The Prophet was asked “O Messenger of Allah! Should we learn these words?” He said, “Yes. It is an obligation on all those who hear this supplication to learn it.”

(They ask thee of the (destined) Hour, when will it come to port…) [7:187]. Said ibn ‘Abbas: “Jabal ibn Qushayr and Shamwal ibn Zayd, who belonged to the Jews, said: ‘O Muhammad, tell us when the last Hour will be, if you are really a prophet, for we know when it is going to be?’ And so Allah, exalted is He, revealed this verse”. Qatadah said: “The Quraysh said to Muhammad: ‘There are between us ties of kinship, so tell us the timing of the last Hour?’ And so Allah, exalted is He, revealed this verse (They ask thee of the (destined) Hour)”. He alone will manifest it at its proper time. However, I will inform you about its signs and what will happen ahead of it. There will be a lot of trials and harj ahead of the last Hour’. They asked: ‘What does harj mean, O Messenger of Allah?’ He said: ‘This is an Abyssinian word which means killing, dryness of people’s hearts and that one is cast among strangers, such that people hardly know each other, those who have good minds will disappear and only a group of weak people will remain who would neither know good nor forbid evil” ‘.
(Asbab Al-Nuzul)
7.19 Al-Wahidi recorded
(Say: For myself I have no power to benefit, nor power to hurt…) [7:188]. Said al-Kalbi: “The people of Mecca said: ‘O Muhammad, does not your Lord inform you about lower prices before they go up, and thus you buy and make profit? And does He not inform you about the land which is about to suffer drought and, thus, you travel to a land which is more fertile?’ And so Allah, exalted is He, revealed this verse”.

Indeed, your Lord is Allah , who created the heavens and earth in six days and then established Himself above the Throne. He covers the night with the day, [another night] chasing it rapidly; and [He created] the sun, the moon, and the stars, subjected by His command. (writing selected Quran verses or Duas for a specific purpose) for him. One of them
recited the aayah

Unquestionably, His is the creation and the command; blessed is Allah , Lord of the worlds (7:54)
The man became silent, began to move and then sat. He then made a prostration for a day and a night. When the same time of the next day reached since he had prostrated, his family members said to him, “All Praise is due to Allah, who has bestowed health upon you”. He said, “An angel was sent towards me to take my soul but when the person recited the aayah (7:54), the angel prostrated and I too did the same”.
