86. At-Tariq

86.1 It was narrated from Jabir bin Samurah (رضي الله عنه) that

The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم) used to recite

والسماء ذات البروج ﴿

“By the heaven holding the big stars” (Surah 85)

and:

﴾ والسماء والطارق ﴿

“By the heaven, and At-Tariq (the night-comer, i.e. the bright star)” (Surah 86)

and similar surahs in Zuhr and ‘Asr.

86.2 Jabir bin Samurah (رضي الله عنه) narrated

“For Zuhr and Asr, Allah’s Messenger (صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم) would recite:

والسماء ذات البروج ﴿

By the heavens, holding the Buruj (Surah 85)

and

﴾ والسماء والطارق ﴿

By the heavens and At-Tariq (Surah 86)

and similar to them.”

86.3 Al-Wahidi (رحمه الله) recorded

 ﴿ والسماء والطارق ﴾
 -By the sky and the night comer
﴿ وما أدراك ما الطارق ﴾
?And what can make you know what is the night comer
 ﴿ النجم الثاقب ﴾
 (86:1-3) -It is the piercing star

This was revealed about Abu Talib. He once went to visit the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم) and the latter offered him bread and milk. As Abu Talib was sitting and eating, a meteor fell, filling everything with fire. Abu Talib was scared. He asked: “What on earth can this be?” The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم) said: “This is a meteor that was thrown and it is one of the signs of Allah”. Abu Talib was amazed, and so Allah, exalted is He, revealed these verses.

86.4 Ibn Mardawih (رحمه الله) related

That Ibn Abbas (رضي الله عنه) said concerning

﴾ والسماء والطارق ﴿ 

By the sky and the night comer- (86:1)

‘Your Lord has taken an oath to manifest during the night and all that which manifests in the night, it is Tariq.’

86.5 Ibn al-Mundhir (رحمه الله) related

From Hazrat Khasif (رحمه الله) that

﴾ النجم الثاقب ﴿

It is the piercing star (86:3)

means that which destroys eavesdropping devils.

86.6 Ibn Jarir (رحمه الله) related

From Hazrat Ibn Zaid (رحمه الله) that

﴾ النجم الثاقب ﴿

It is the piercing star (86:3)

means Pleiades star cluster.

86.7 Abd bin Hameed (رحمه الله) related

From Hazrat Mujahid (رحمه الله) that

﴾ النجم الثاقب ﴿

It is the piercing star (86:3)

pertains to the star that erupts fire.

86.8 It is narrated from Ubayy ibn Ka’b (رضي الله عنه) that the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said,

“For the person who studies Surah At-Tariq, Allah will reward this action ten times the number of stars in the sky.”

(Majma al-Bayan, 10/469, Kitabul Amal)

86.9 It is narrated that the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said,

“Teaching Surah At-Tariq is a means of closeness to Allah and a cause of forgiveness of sins except polytheism.”

(Mustadrak al-Wasa’il 4/365)

86.10 Imam Jafar as-Sadiq (عليه السلام) said,

“Whoever recites Surah Tariq in his obligatory prayer would enjoy great prestige and position before Allah on the Day of Judgment and he would be among the friends of the prophets and their companions in Paradise.”

86.11 Sayyid Mustafa Musawi (رحمه الله) writes

(i) Reciting Surah At-Tariq over anything keeps it safe.
(ii) If Surah At-Tariq is recited before taking medicine, then the medicine will be a sure cure.
(iii) The water in which Surah At-Tariq has been dissolved should be poured gently on a wound and it will heal with the Grace of Allah (سبحانه و تعالى).

86.12 Allama Alam Faqri (رحمه الله) writes

Surah At-Tariq is very effective in overcoming the traps of malevolent spirits.

86.13 Ashraf Ali Thanvi (رحمه الله) writes

(i) For protection against evil men and jinn, recite the Aayah

﴾إن كل نفس لما عليها حافظ﴿

There is no soul but that it has over it a protector. (86:4)

of Surah At-Tariq frequently (Aamal-e-Qurani p42).

(ii) To catch a thief or recover stolen goods, recite Surah At-Tariq by the door from which the stolen goods were taken out of the premises. Either the goods will be recovered or an indication will be given in the dream (Aamal-e-Qurani p107).

(iii) To stop nocturnal emission (Ihtilam), recite the first 10 verses of Surah At-Tariq before retiring to bed. It is an effective source of protection against wet dreams (Aamal-e-Qurani p101).

86.14 Allama Alam Faqri (رحمه الله) writes

(i) To stop wet dreams, recite the verses

والسماء والطارق

By the sky and the night comer –

وما أدراك ما الطارق

And what can make you know what is the night comer?

النجم الثاقب

It is the piercing star –

إن كل نفس لما عليها حافظ

There is no soul but that it has over it a protector. (86:1-4)

of Surah At-Tariq 101 times daily for 7 days (every month) before sleeping.

(ii) The verses (86:1-4) of Surah At-Tariq are also useful in relieving insomnia

(iii) For safety against theft, the verses (86:1-4) of Surah At-Tariq should recited 41 times after Isha.

(iv) For increase in bodily strength, recite the verses

فلينظر الإنسان مم خلق

So let man observe from what he was created.

خلق من ماء دافق

He was created from a fluid, ejected,

يخرج من بين الصلب والترائب

Emerging from between the backbone and the ribs.

إنه على رجعه لقادر

Indeed, Allah , to return him [to life], is Able. (86:5-8)

of Surah At-Tariq 100 times after Fajr and Maghrib for 11 days (every month).

(iv) The verses (86:5-8) are also useful in enhancing the male sexual stamina.

(v) For increase in wisdom and intuition, recite the verses

والسماء ذات الرجع

By the sky which returns [rain]

والأرض ذات الصدع

And [by] the earth which cracks open,

إنه لقول فصل

Indeed, the Qur’an is a decisive statement,

وما هو بالهزل

And it is not amusement.

إنهم يكيدون كيدا

Indeed, they are planning a plan,

وأكيد كيدا

But I am planning a plan.

فمهل الكافرين أمهلهم رويدا

So allow time for the disbelievers. Leave them awhile. (86:11-17)

of Surah At-Tariq 41 times daily after Asr and Isha.

(vi) To relieve pain in the jaws or toothache, write the verses (86:11-17) of Surah At-Tariq using your index finger on the spot of pain seven times. By the permission of Allah, the affliction will go away.

86.15 Al-Bahrani (رحمه الله) writes

Surah At-Tariq is beneficial in the prevention of infection of wound and repellence of insects and pests.
